Import additional columns in users table
This short article will show you how easy is to import additional columns (additional user info) in Joomla! 1.5 users table.
If you have more columns in “_users” table from joomla, more than default joomla columns, (ie. You need for each user number phone and let say that you put in “_users” table “number phone” column).
Using “User Import” menu, this column will not be taken into account neither import of new users nor update existing users, so in this case you can use “Additional Columns” option which is more useful for you.
If you are using commercial ARRA User Import Export for Joomla! 1.6 you will have this feature included starting with 1.6.1 version
This is how user table is before the import:
All you have to do is to set how many additional fields will be imported in user table, we added 35 new fields, if you need more just contact me.
Complete the field name and default value if some users have no records for that new fields.
Import the file you have; please be sure that file looks like the samples we have there (you can download a sample txt or csv file and fill with your data), pay attention to field separator too, is very important.
You don't need to check database but this image will show you that additional fields were added in _users table.
Settings for import files
You have all settings for import like in “User Import” menu (separator, overwrite default Joomla! columns, usertype, emails) plus overwrite all your additional columns for existing users.
If in your file for import you doesn’t have your new columns,
ie.
name,username,email
John Doe,john,john@yahoo.com
you can put default values of new columns for this row from import file in the following way:
- set number of new columns from “Enter here number of additional columns for import”
- for each column, write colum’s name in “Column 1”, “Column 2”… and for every column, if is not set a value in import file, you can put a default value for all users from import file, writing this default value in “Default Value” input text.
For all imported users, in database in your new columns, will be saved this default values.
If you have already set this columns in import file
ie.
name,username,email,number phone,address
John Doe,john,john@yahoo.com,234212,New York
Alexander,alex,alex@yahoo.com,674875,Ohio
Pavel Aris,aris,aris@yahoo.com,
and for example, “Pavel Aris” doesn’t have “number phone” and “address” values set in this import file, you can set default values for import and this values will be saved in database only for “Pavel Aris” because in this file for import he doesn’t have values for new columns.
But, let say that John Doe is already in database and in database “number phone“ is 11223344 and “address” is Paris, you can let old values as they are or you can change this by checking “Overwrite additional column -” (and name of this column from database) (ie. “Overwrite additional column – number phone”) to YES, and for John Doe new number phone will be 234212 (like in import file) or you can set YES for address too, and new address will be New York, or you can overwrite all values from database with all values from import file checking “Overwrite entire data (all fields from Joomla! tables) from imported file for existing users”.
