This article is about how to migrate/import existing Joomla! 1.5 users in Joomla! 1.6 website.
With ARRA User Export Import 1.6.0 version, administrators will be able to import users that are exported from Joomla! 1.5, export done with our component.
Once you have the component installed, go to "Components" and click on ARRA User Export Import. This will get you into the Main window of our component.
There you can start importing Joomla! users, by clicking on User Import button. You will find that almost all options are commented (tooltips) - just mouse over the titles and lines bellow them to find out what each options does.. Please read with attention description for each line of options before click on "Import" buttons!!!
Like on the export feature, we have some important options here too:
1. Import CSV/TXT file fomat -this will import CSV or TXT file that contain new Joomla! users, ones you have exported using Joomla! 1.5 version of our component.. The file can be made by our export tool or by yourself. Please pay attention to the "Field Separator" option on right: if you will choose a wrong one, the file will not be imported and you will receive an error message. Another message will be received if you will try to import a file which was exported with the "Break name into first name and last name." option from User Export, because the "first name" and "last name" are not recognizable fields from the database.
All the options chosen from the right hand side of the page will be active for these import types, so please read our notes there.
2. CSV/TXT Import options - there are a lot of options that can be applied to imported files, all these will be applied for Import CSV/TXT file format option.
3. Import SQL/ZIP file fomat -this option is doing what phpMyAdmin does, it will import an SQL or ZIP file made by our export tool or exported with phpMyAdmin, please read the comments we added there. Be aware that all options from the right side won't apply for these two type of file formats!!! Before you truncate tables is best to make a backup - when you hit Database Backup button, you may get a 404 error page, this is happen because Joomla! /files/ folder were backup is done has not enough writing permissions; change their permissions to 777 and after backup revert it to unwriteable.
4. Email settings - Send emails to new Joomla! users (that don't exist in the database) after import. You can customize email subject, email body as you want by using the custom variables. Be aware that email will be sent only if file imported is .txt or .csv.
You can also use all the features that you were using in version for Joomla! 1.5, like "Additional columns" and "UTF-8" support.
